Leigh and I hitched a ride to Nyc with Smokin Joe Frazier on Monday afternoon where he would be going to Madison Square Garden to celebrate the 40th anniversary of "The Fight of The Century" where he fought 40 years ago against Ali. It is a pretty amazing story how important this fight was, not just to each other, but to the whole world. Rumors have it that the Vietnam War took a break, the troubles in Northern Ireland stopped, riots broke out in many Us cities, and a fight that changed the world happened. We on the other hand had a very important opening to go to and had to miss out on this. Long time friend of The Slingluff Gallery, Nick Pedersen was having his Mfa thesis show and book release at Pratt Institute! Leigh and I were oh so happy to have been able to join Nick, his family, and loved ones on such a joyful night.... Later on that night we met up with Matt Siren for a few drinks. The next day it was back to Philadelphia for Smokin's 40th private party. Here are a few photos from the 24 hours that we were able to leave Philadelphia.

Pixelated Jewelry by Maaike Evers and Mike Simonian "An exploration of tangible vs. virtual in relation to real and perceived value. Using Google Image Search, we browsed through some of the most expensive and often famous jewelry in the world, the low-res images we found were stolen, doctored, then transferred to leather, creating a tangible new incarnation. Erin Murray: Architecture Parlante

Show Statement

The term architecture parlante ("speaking architecture") refers to the concept of buildings that explain their own function or identity. This can be anything from a statehouse with a patriotic inscription to an oddball commercial enterprise like the famous Brown Derby restaurant, shaped as its namesake. Here, common communication trumps the conceits of Modernism and its Miesian dissection of space, and symbolism is heartily embraced.

While not all of the structures in my work are as overtly parlante as say, a banana stand shaped like a banana, they are "speaking" in the sense that they can convey much about themselves, whether intentionally or not. In a way they are perfectly Postmodern without the benefit of being architect designed: unashamedly embellished and not without a sense of humor. It is this sense of architectural absurdity that I am exploring with the work in this show.

Learning From Harbison Avenue (2011) depicts a stretch of road in Northeast Philly near where I grew up. The houses are small and as simple as shoeboxes but cheerfully trimmed with awnings, fences and shutters of various design. To me they are endearingly absurd, my favorite type of building. The title references Robert Venturi's book Learning From Las Vegas in which he extols the virtues of commercial strip architecture from an academic's point of view. Not for the first time here I've invoked Venturi's work in titling my own in order to add intellectual "weight" to structures that are normally seen as inconsequential. Indeed, the show title serves much the same function.

Three paintings, Liquor Barn, La Villa, and Ming Kui Restaurant (2010) take commercially embellished buildings out of their context and place them where they ostensibly want to be, and no one's happier for it.

BBillboard and Yokefellow (2010) share this sense of absurdity in a more subtle, lyrical way. Both dwarfed by structures above, they have the patina of buildings designed by time. One is more interesting for the graffiti on its backside then anything on its front, while the other presents us with the modern church, where one need only add a cross and a gothic arch to your wrought iron to invoke a sense of the sacred.

Last night Leigh, Nick, and myself piled in the car and headed on over to Apple Jacks Studio to see the new show by our good friend Amanda Spitzfaden, "My Heart is Drowning in The Atlantic". Amanda opened her studio doors in the spring of o10, mostly showing Philadelphia based artists, this show was all her own and what an amazing fun show it was. It was such a great mixture of bright and playful paintings that warms the heart and soul, and on that cold and damp night it was such a delight. Want to return to the Pine Cone?

The Slingluff Gallery: What is "Minor Superior" about?

Mike Maxwell: The show is about the balance of opposites and the symbiotic dance opposites must engage in in order to exist. The show examines the perception of reality and subtle contradictions found in human consciousness.

TSG: How do your subjects help tell the story in your art?

MM: The subjects are the story. The figures act as metaphors that tell my own personal history. The hope is that the viewer find something in the objects that relates to their own existence and can act as a part of their own history.

TSG: What is your most challenging part of being an artist?

MM: Paying the bills

TSG: What is the most important lesson you've learned from art that you apply to life?

MM: To spend my time as I see fit and to never allocate that authority to anyone else.

The Slingluff Gallery presents Mike Maxwell, San Diego based artist. Maxwell has built a loyal following with his signature stone-blue faces, gloomy churches, and beautiful windmills. Self-taught and continuously improving in his work, the poetic dreamy scenes examine humanity, conceptuality, genetics and consciousness.

With subtle changes in both theme and process, Maxwell has sharpened his skill providing more depth in his current work. Maxwell’s choice of color is deliberate and with purpose, reflecting a lack of race and ambiguity in the stone-blue faced pieces.
The work has a lot to with his personal re-education and a desire to learn and understand things that are so prevalent in our society but are often forgotten by the masses. For anyone who remembers a decade back, to when the Schuylkill Banks (not that anyone called it that) was all trash and rubble, the public art installation that's about to overtake the riverbank should be especially moving. The three-day project from Mural Arts, created by Boston-based artist and MIT professor Meejin Yoon, will scatter 90 LED-lit plastic orbs along the bank and within the river itself. The orbs will be interactive, changing color in response to passersby. The temporary work opens with a reception Oct. 15 at 6:30 p.m. and remains in place from dusk through dawn on the 15, 16 and 17, between Market and Chestnut streets. This story is from Brownstoner.

Slingluff: So tell the viewers a little bit more about your work.

Mr. Trask: I have been focusing on a lot of issues,conditions, and environments
i see around me. Themes dealing with Progress vs, Preservation,
bringing local rural, communal attitudes back into the city, and how
important things like graffiti and public art can be to revitalizing
neighborhoods instead of destroying them.. My paintings try to bring
the viewer into this world whether it be through a landscape
connecting us back home through power lines , or a portrait of a
building, or place. Its all about making a connection through
painting. I love working in many layers of color that have been very
physically put down on canvas or wood, forcing the viewer to see a
battle that occurs between the surface of my paintings against what is
representational and what is abstract.. I believe that for every man
made perfect angle nature counter acts with something organic .. The
buildings i paint are almost like grandparents in that they are
structured,wise, grounded,and full of stories old and new .

S: What inspired you when to get into art?

T: I have always produced art whether it be drawing on skateboards or
mimicking record covers , to painting on canvas or murals. I think i
was lucky to have parents that took me to many shows and museums and
gave me the freedom to dream of being a artist. I realised that
inspiration and beauty is all around us.

S: Do you still find inspiration in this?

T:If a person wakes up in the morning and is un able to find anything
humbling, beautiful and inspiring that you've become dead to the
creative world. I just need to simply open my eyes and see ...
q Any other shows coming up that you would like to let the views know about?
No just trying to find some new places to show outside of virginia,
just finished a show here in Philadelphia and a show and residency in
Park City Utah, so its time to get caught up on commissions, mural
work, and a new body of work..

S: Anything else that you would like to add?

T: I simply love Philadelphia and can only hope to get some more work
here and some murals scattered around the city over the next year.
